In recognition of National Science Week Spirit of Gold Coast is calling all young eco-enthusiasts to take part in our third annual Young Whale Warrior Competition, where we will find, crown and reward the local youngster who best reflects the Spirit of a Whale Warrior.
This competition aims to encourage young Gold Coasters to turn their passion for the Gentle Giants of the sea into action. Our very first Young Whale Warrior, Bobby Walls from Clover Hill State School, set the bar high with his winning entry. You can view his inspiring video below.
Being crowned Spirit’s very first Young Whale Warrior in 2017 opened up a world of new experiences for Bobby. The young and passionate Eco Warrior has shared many adventures with Spirit, and in his own words:
“I’ve been so lucky and have been on board with Spirit Whale Watching countless times to be part of the Spirit team, helping with on board activities, photography, speaking to guests about whale facts and conservation, getting involved with Sea Shepherd beach clean ups and searching for their newest Young Whale Warrior to be selected for Spirit of Gold Coast.”
The 2018 Young Whale Warrior Competition saw not one, but TWO winners of the title – brother and sister duo, Max and Emma Rutherford.
Max explains the impact that being a Young Whale Warrior has had on his life:
“Being a whale warrior meant so much to me. It inspired me to think more carefully about what we do in everyday life and the impact it has on animals I got to visit sea shepherd and do ocean clean ups with these lovely people as well. When you are a whale warrior the people that you meet and the friendships that you make last forever. We are so lucky to have these wonderful people that are so passionate about keeping our Earth clean and healthy.”
